Overview
GroundUp partnered with Aarhus Municipality to revitalize the historic "Godsbanen" railway depot, transforming it into a vibrant cultural and commercial hub. This project aimed to preserve the site's industrial heritage while creating a modern, sustainable space that fosters community and innovation.
Godsbanen presented a unique challenge: blending the site's rich history with a contemporary vision for the future. GroundUp's team meticulously restored the original brick structures, incorporating them into a cohesive design that housed art galleries, co-working spaces, theaters, and a diverse range of restaurants and shops.
A key aspect of the project was ensuring the development seamlessly integrated with the surrounding urban landscape. We prioritized pedestrian and cyclist accessibility, creating a network of green spaces and public plazas that invited community interaction. Additionally, we implemented sustainable building practices throughout the project, minimizing environmental impact and promoting energy efficiency.
Key Outcomes
Godsbanen has become a cultural cornerstone of Aarhus, attracting residents and visitors alike. The project boasts:
Restoration of over 10,000 sqm of historic railway buildings
Creation of 15,000 sqm of new commercial and cultural spaces
A vibrant public square hosting regular events and markets
A 20% increase in foot traffic in the surrounding area
