Overview

GroundUp partnered with Odense Municipality to transform a neglected underutilized area in the city center into a vibrant, sustainable mixed-use development named "Grønne Kvarter" (Danish for "Green Quarter"). This ambitious project aimed to create a pedestrian-friendly, community-focused space with a focus on green infrastructure and affordable housing.

The Grønne Kvarter project presented several challenges. Firstly, the site lacked a cohesive identity and suffered from fragmented infrastructure. Secondly, ensuring the development remained affordable while incorporating sustainable practices was crucial.

GroundUp's team tackled these challenges by implementing a human-centric design approach. We prioritized walkable streets, public squares, and green spaces, creating a sense of connection and encouraging community interaction. Additionally, we incorporated innovative energy-efficient technologies and sustainable building materials throughout the project, minimizing environmental impact.

A key aspect of the project was ensuring affordability. We worked closely with the municipality to implement a mix of housing options, including subsidized units and co-living spaces, catering to diverse income levels. This ensured the development remained accessible to a broad range of residents.

Key Outcomes

Grønne Kvarter has become a vibrant and inclusive hub in Odense's city center. The project boasts:

  • Over 500 new sustainable homes, including affordable and co-living options

  • 10,000 sqm of commercial space, including shops, cafes, and co-working facilities

  • 3 hectares of public green spaces and a network of pedestrian pathways

  • A 10% decrease in car traffic within the surrounding area

GroundUp's expertise in urban regeneration and their commitment to community engagement were instrumental in the success of the Havnefront project. They helped us create a truly transformative development that has become a beacon for sustainable and inclusive city living.
